Waterproof Porcelain Tiles

Choosing the right tile that is fit for purpose when considering a redecoration project could mean the difference between longevity and having to retile multiple times over a very short period. There are a number of things that must be considered when making this selection including its intended purpose. The room in which the tile is to be used can have a big impact on the tile selection, especially in spaces where there will be flowing water – such as bathrooms.

Waterproof Porcelain Tiles

Porcelain as a material has very strong waterproof qualities, making it a great choice when looking at bathroom redecoration. Non polished porcelain tiles do not absorb water – typically less than 0.5% and so are idea for any wet areas. Porcelain tiles which have been polished should be sealed with either a water based varnish or solvent based. Doing this will improve the longevity of such a tile.

Also known as ‘fine china’, this material has been used for centuries in craft work, particularly for pottery in China – hence the often referred to name. The material is very dense, making it far stronger and more durable than other tile materials such as ceramic. It was previously vastly more expensive to make tiles for the home with porcelain, however, thanks to modern production methods there are now a wide variety of porcelain products available.

Porcelain tiles are available in a wide variety of sizes, styles and colours offering greater choice when thinking of your own bathroom design and acquired decorative tastes. Although slightly more expensive compared to tiles made from other materials, it is often seem that porcelain tiles are a worthwhile investment in wet rooms thanks to its durability waterproof quality.
